While it is possible you may notice a very subtle difference immediately, the fact is that it takes several months for the true results to take shape. This timeline is mainly due to:
- Swelling. Any type of cosmetic surgery causes swelling. It is part of the healing process, and it does conceal your results temporarily. The general treatment area may look puffy and bloated, but it will go down over time. You should notice some improvement after 2-3 weeks, and then a drastic difference after 2-3 months. Most people are looking at final or near-final results at 6 months, with a very minor and barely noticeable reduction in swelling for up to a year.
- Skin retraction. Liposuction removes targeted fat cells, but it does not tighten or remove excess skin. That’s why it’s so important to have your candidacy determined by an experienced plastic surgeon who can make sure that there is enough skin elasticity present so that the skin will shrink back to the body contour once the fat is gone. This process takes time, typically between 1-3 months. The compression garment you wear will help the skin contract, so it’s important to wear it as instructed.
