Rejuvapen

Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that can be used all over the body. The most common use for this treatment is to address fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, and stretch marks.

How does microneedling work?

Microneedling creates microscopic punctures in the skin, causing surface-level trauma to the derma. This procedure is FDA approved, safe and effective to do on a monthly basis.  At ASA Aesthetic Laser Center and MedSpa we use Rejuvapen NXT®, one of the most effective devices on the market delivering exceptional results after one treatment.

Benefits of Microneedling

  • Enhances texture of skin
  • Stimulates collagen production
  • Helps reduce scars and hyperpigmentation
  • Reduces enlarged/visible pores
  • Microneedling can be used in combination with treatments like lasers and chemical peels for a more aggressive approach.

What Should I Expect During the Microneedling Procedure?

The microneedling procedure is fairly simple. Led by a team of board-certified surgeons, our providers will use a handheld device that pricks your skin with very thin needles. Some microneedling devices look like a roller, while others resemble a pen. The needles in the microneedling device make tiny holes in the surface of your skin. Your provider can adjust the length of the needles to achieve the desired results, with longer needles providing better results for deep scars and pockmarks from acne.

Prior to microneedling, our provider will clean your skin and then apply lidocaine or another numbing cream or ointment. Your procedure will begin after the numbing cream has taken effect, which is about 30 to 45 minutes. The procedure itself takes only 15 minutes to a few hours, depending on the size of the treatment area.

How Does Microneedling Work?

Microneedling works by slightly damaging the top layer of skin. Your body responds to this trauma by stimulating the body’s natural healing process. More specifically, your body responds by producing more collagen and elastin, which are proteins that keep your skin firm, smooth, and youthful-looking.

While most people have microneedling done on their face, you may also choose to have it on your neck, legs, back, or any other area where you notice signs of premature aging.

What Is Microneedling Used For?

This non-invasive, non-surgical therapy can treat a wide variety of cosmetic conditions, such as:

  • Fine lines or wrinkles
  • Enlarged pores
  • Loose or crepey skin
  • Mild scars from acne, burns, etc.
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Skin discoloration
  • Stretch marks

Can Microneedling Be Used with Other Treatments?

Combining microneedling with other treatments can help you achieve smoother, flawless results for your skin faster. Treatments that are compatible with microneedling include:

  • PRP Therapy – another wrinkle treatment that uses platelet-rich plasma to promote healing and boost the production of collagen and elastin
  • Chemical peels – remove the top layer of skin to reduce the visible appearance of sun damage, blemishes, brown spots, and wrinkles.
  • Microdermabrasion – removes the top layer of skin cells to eliminate surface-level imperfections such as sun damage, pigmentation, and light scarring

Am I a Candidate for Microneedling?

Ideal candidates for microneedling are patients who have wrinkles, dull skin, uneven skin tone and texture, and acne scarring on their face. Patients who undergo microneedling treatment should be in overall good health. We recommend patients quit smoking at least six weeks before their microneedling treatment.

Because microneedling causes microwounds on the skin, this treatment may not be suitable for patients who have bleeding or blood-clotting disorders. If you have eczema, diabetes, or an active skin infection, you should avoid microneedling.

Are There Any Risks with Microneedling?

Like other skin improvement treatments, microneedling can come with several risks. These risks may include:

  • Infection
  • Bruising
  • Scarring
  • Increased hyperpigmentation
  • Skin damage

Side effects such as redness, swelling, and itching or flaking of the skin are normal and should disappear within a few days after treatment. If you experience a worsening of any of these symptoms, contact us as soon as possible.

How Long Will Results from Microneedling Last?

Results from microneedling can last anywhere between four to six weeks. Because the skin is constantly exposed to the outside environment and replacing itself, patients schedule microneedling treatments at a frequency of every four to six weeks to maintain healthy skin and keep their desired complexion.
