Some areas of the body just seem to store fat no matter how much someone exercises or diets. They're familiar to many of us and even have nicknames -- muffin top, love handles, double chin, and saddlebags. These are among the areas we target with CoolSculpting at our Vineland, NJ, practice. CoolSculpting is one of the most popular nonsurgical fat reduction procedures, using cold temperatures to reduce stubborn pockets of fat.
A Consultation That's All About You
We create a customized CoolSculpting treatment plan based on your specific concerns and a thorough physical examination. CoolSculpting can be performed on several different areas of the body using various applicators designed specifically to fit certain contours. During your consultation, we'll discuss your aesthetic goals and make sure that CoolSculpting is the right treatment for you. In some cases, patients may decide they want more extensive fat reduction for more dramatic results, which would require liposuction. It's important to remember that CoolSculpting works best for patients who are already at or very near their ideal weight and who are looking to tone specific areas of the body.
How CoolSculpting Works
The proven science behind CoolSculpting is a process called Cryolipolysis®, which is based on the fact that fat cells are more sensitive to cold temperatures than other types of cells. The CoolSculpting procedure uses controlled cooling that won't damage the skin or tissue surrounding targeted fat cells. Fat cells gradually crystalize, or "freeze," then die. In the weeks following the treatment, the body absorbs these dead cells and they are naturally removed through the body's lymphatic system.
Your CoolSculpting Procedure
A CoolSculpting treatment typically takes an hour, depending on the area or areas treated. CoolSculpting can reduce fat in several areas, including the following:
- Flanks (love handles or muffin top)
- Inner and outer thighs
- Upper arms
- Under the chin (double chin)
A CoolSculpting procedure begins with the provider applying a gel to the targeted treatment area. Then the clinician positions the applicator on the area. Applicators are designed specifically to fit different areas. Most applicators use vacuum suction to draw skin and fat up between 2 panels, and you'll feel some tugging. As the area cools, you may experience a tingling or stinging sensation for a few minutes before it becomes numb.
Most patients experience little or no discomfort during the duration of the procedure. Some people read, or scroll through their smart phones or other mobile devices; others may even nap.
What to Expect After Treatment
Immediately after the treatment, the provider massages the treated area to smooth the frozen fat. Because it's a nonsurgical procedure, patients can return to work or other normal daily activities after they leave our office. Some soreness, redness, or swelling can be expected, but these are minor side effects and usually resolve quickly.
Depending on your aesthetic goals and the treatment plan we've created, you may return for a second CoolSculpting procedure in a month or so. The initial results are usually seen after a few weeks, as the fat cells die, but most patients see continued improvement for 2 to 3 months.
