Your Breast Reduction Procedure
Breast reduction involves the surgical removal of excess skin and breast tissue through excision. Occasionally liposuction may be used to remove fat and improve contours.
The surgeon employs 2 incision types:
- Lollipop incision: This method involves an incision completely around the areola and another incision from the bottom of the areola vertically down to the inframammary fold (IMF), the crease beneath the breast.
- Inverted-T incision: Also called an "anchor" incision, this technique is like the lollipop incision but with an additional incision along the IMF.
The cosmetic surgeon repositions the nipple, which remains attached to its nerves and blood vessels, to a higher location (in more extreme cases, the nipple is detached and reattached).
