A Consultation That's All About You

Dr. Bidic and Dr. Gundlapalli understand that overly large breasts are more than a cosmetic issue for their patients. The surgeon takes the time to discuss all of your symptoms and concerns to develop the appropriate surgical solution for you. In some cases, he can help you to obtain insurance coverage for your breast reduction surgery. This typically requires documentation from an orthopedic surgeon or chiropractor, as well as a dermatologist, and/or primary care physician, to demonstrate proof of a history of ailments related to enlarged breasts. The staff at American Surgical Arts can assist you in obtaining the appropriate documentation to determine insurance coverage for your breast reduction procedure.

Your Breast Reduction Procedure

Breast reduction involves the surgical removal of excess skin and breast tissue through excision. Occasionally liposuction may be used to remove fat and improve contours.

The surgeon employs 2 incision types:

  • Lollipop incision: This method involves an incision completely around the areola and another incision from the bottom of the areola vertically down to the inframammary fold (IMF), the crease beneath the breast.
  • Inverted-T incision: Also called an "anchor" incision, this technique is like the lollipop incision but with an additional incision along the IMF.

The cosmetic surgeon repositions the nipple, which remains attached to its nerves and blood vessels, to a higher location (in more extreme cases, the nipple is detached and reattached). He reduces the size of the areola (if necessary) and excises skin, breast, and fatty tissue until the desired shape and volume are achieved.

The surgeon applies multiple layers of sutures to support the breasts' new shape and closes the skin with buried sutures that do not need to be removed.

What To Expect After Breast Reduction Surgery

After surgery, someone will need to drive you home and help you for the first several days. Support garments and oral pain medication can help alleviate temporary soreness.

Activities such as lifting anything weighing more than 15 pounds, being fully submerged in water, or anything that raises your heart rate above 100 will be restricted for three weeks. You will visit us one week, four weeks, and three months after surgery to assess the progress of your results.

Swelling and bruising will diminish over several weeks. Although incision lines will remain, they will fade over time. Treatments for improving scars are available, and most patients feel that scars are a small price to pay for the relief they experience. Once you heal, you will enjoy a more desirable appearance and improved comfort.

Should I Get a Breast Lift or Reduction?

There are stark differences between the purpose of a breast lift and breast reduction surgery. A breast lift eliminates excess skin and moves the nipple to a more youthful position while raising the breast mound, whereas a breast reduction removes excess fat and breast tissue.

Although a breast lift and breast reduction both focus on enhancing the breasts’ position, a reduction focuses on reducing volume. A breast lift does not remove any breast tissue. The goal is to make the breasts appear more elevated and youthful rather than altering their size.

Patients who undergo breast reduction often notice that their breasts appear higher. The repositioning of the nipple, removal of excess skin, and tightening of the surrounding tissue ultimately reduce both lift and size in a single procedure.

How long does a Breast Reduction procedure take?

On average, a breast reduction procedure takes around two to four hours to complete, depending on the specifics of your procedure. For those with larger breasts, the procedure may take closer to four hours.

What are the benefits of a Breast Reduction procedure?

There are several benefits to having a breast reduction performed. Perhaps the most notable benefit is the alleviation of back, shoulder, and neck pain associated with the weight of your breasts. Over time, large breasts can cause chronic pain in these areas due to muscle strain. Many women choose to get a breast reduction for this specific reason.

Some patients also choose to have a breast reduction to solve other issues, including restrictions of physical movement and rashes under the breast crease. Whether you want to improve the aesthetic appearance of your large breasts or relieve tension, breast reduction can help.

What are the risks of a Breast Reduction procedure?

Like any other form of surgery, a breast reduction comes with some risks. This can include:

  • Bleeding
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Blood Clots
  • Infection
  • Loss of Nipple Sensation
  • Nerve Damage

With these risks in mind, it’s important to find a board-certified plastic surgeon who knows how to minimize complications.

At American Surgical Arts, Dr. Bidic and Dr. Gundlapalli are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons and have decades of combined experience providing amazing results to plastic surgery patients.

Does a Breast Reduction require anesthesia?

Breast reduction surgery is done under general anesthesia at an outpatient surgical facility. Once your procedure is complete, you will need a spouse, friend, or family member to drive you home and monitor you for at least 24 hours.

Do I Need to Lose Weight Before a Breast Reduction?

Some patients may benefit from losing weight prior to their surgery. This is due to the fact overly large breasts can be increased by excess weight. If a patient undergoes breast reduction surgery while they are overweight and proceeds to lose weight in the future, this could cause their results to be disproportionate to their new figure.

Furthermore, being overweight increases the risk of surgical complications, which is why patients are encouraged to be within their ideal weight range prior to any plastic surgery.

The best way to ensure the longevity of your results is to carefully discuss breast reduction with a skilled plastic surgeon. Dr. Bidic and Dr. Gundlapalli are eager to help you find the perfect solution for your goals. This can include offering advice on how to prepare yourself for future breast reduction procedures.

What will my scarring look like after a Breast Reduction?

Along your surgical incisions, your scar will appear as a raised pink line. Over time, the scar will gradually flatten and darken. In general, scars from a breast reduction won’t be visible when you are wearing a bra or bikini top.

Depending on what type of incision is used for your procedure, you may or may not have a scar along the crease beneath your breast.

Dr. Bidic or Dr. Gundlapalli will consider the location of future scar tissue when determining the most appropriate incision method for your breast reduction surgery. Ultimately, the choice will depend on the amount of fat and tissue that needs to be removed in order to achieve your desired shape and volume.

How Long Do Breast Reduction Results Last?

Any excess skin or fat that is removed during your breast reduction cannot grow back. In that sense, a breast reduction is permanent. However, there are certain factors that can increase your breast size. For example, if you gain weight, there is a chance that new fat can get deposited into your breasts. To extend your results, try to maintain your current weight and exercise regularly.

Breast Reduction Surgery Benefits in Mullica Hill, NJ

There are numerous reasons why patients choose to undergo a breast reduction procedure with the team at American Surgical Arts. Several benefits make this a worthwhile investment for the right candidates:

  • Enhanced self-image. Women who struggle with their body image or self-confidence due to their breast size often feel a sense of relief and elation following their procedure. Rather than being self-conscious about their breasts, they can feel comfortable and confident in their bodies.
  • Greater clothing options. Many women who have large breasts struggle to find clothing that is both functional and comfortable without exaggerating the appearance of their cleavage. Through breast reduction, women who once struggled to find clothes can now enjoy a greater range of options.
  • Improved comfort in everyday life. From more comfortable bras to less discomfort, while running and sleeping, breast reduction helps women feel more comfortable in their daily lives.
  • Reduced skin irritation. Large breasts often cause skin irritation, which is naturally reduced after a reduction.

Easier to breathe. Many women note that breathing feels less laborious after a breast reduction, especially when lying down.
